You might think kids doodling in church for “hundreds of years” is an exaggeration. But drawings of ships, animals, game boards, and names have been found scratched into church pews and walls dating back to medieval times.

Culture may expect children to sit quietly and listen in church, but Scripture puts the primary responsibility for discipling children on their parents – not the church.

Church can be a vital part of spiritual growth. But it’s up to you, the parents, to weave God’s truth into ordinary moments to “bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).

…Or you could just force them to listen to the sermon. I’m sure that’ll work great.

Ephesians 6:4 

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Final thought:

I struggle to pay attention too, so far be it from me to yell at my kids for drawing. But I believe if I do my job of teaching my kids how amazing God really is, they will naturally want to learn more as they mature, and hopefully, start listening in church!
