What makes Abraham the undisputed heavyweight champion of faith? Let’s break it down.

God spoke to Abram (a pagan) and told him to leave his home, family, and security to travel to an unknown destination. He did this without question.

God promised a 75-year-old Abraham that he would be a father of a nation. After 24 years of waiting, God specified that his wife Sarah (who was barren and now 89 years old) would bear a child. Abraham trusted God over the reality of their bodies.

Abraham’s faith was put to the ultimate test when God asked him to sacrifice that same promised son, Isaac. Remembering God had promised him more descendants than there were stars in the sky, Abraham believed that God would raise Isaac from the dead or somehow intervene (which God did).

And here’s the kicker – the Bible says Abraham’s belief “was credited to him as righteousness.” So long before Jesus died for his sins, Abraham was saved. Not because he was perfect... He doubted, he lied to save his own skin, and he tried to force God’s plan through his own actions. 

…But because he continued to move forward in obedience and trust, leaning on the faithfulness of the God who called him.

Genesis 15:5-6

And [God] brought [Abraham] outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
