Growing up in the 90s in my conservative home, there was good music (e.g.,Perry Como) and evil music (everything recorded after 1970)…

I was always nervous listening to anything with an electric guitar. When my Vanilla Ice cassette tape was discovered, I thought my life was over.

But the bible encourages the creation of new music (Psalm 33:3), and using a variety of instruments (Psalm 150:3-5) in our worship.

As with everything, it’s not about appearance or style, but what’s in our hearts that matters to God. 1 Samual 16:7 says "For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." And in regards to worship, Colossians 3:16 says we are to “sing to God with gratitude in our hearts”.

It doesn’t matter if you’re singing from a hymnal or a playing a face-melting guitar solo. The sound is equally beautiful to God when it’s offered to Him with a grateful heart.

Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy.

Psalm 150:3-5 

raise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute and harp! Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes! Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals! (Sounds like heavy metal to me!)
