For those familiar with the Israelites’ story, we’ve all thought it… "What the heck was their problem?"

They’re called a “stiff-necked” people nine times in the Bible. The metaphor comes from a stubborn ox that locks its neck muscles, fighting against the yoke and refusing to turn. Similarly, the stiff-necked Israelites continually refused to submit to God’s direction.

A mere 40 days after witnessing a supernatural and terrifying manifestation of God’s presence on Mount Sinai, they created a golden calf and worshipped it. God had parted the Red Sea for them and led them out of Egypt with a pillar of fire! How could they not trust Him?

I've often thought that if I'd witnessed that, I would do better. But human nature hasn’t changed. We, too, turn to idols of our own making in the face of fear and uncertainty – whether it be money, sex, alcohol, relationships, or anything else we prioritize over God.

Yet as Israel repeatedly rebelled, God repeatedly forgave them, provided for them, and ultimately brought them to the land He promised them. God’s nature hasn’t changed either… and Jesus promises that His “yoke is easy” and His “burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). He asks us to take His yoke, learn from Him, and let Him lead us. We don’t need stronger necks – just softer hearts.
